Day 9: Historic center of Vienna: Hobsburg Palace, Capuchin Church, Vienna Cathedral

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Today we will tell you what to do in the historic center of Vienna. For this we have started at 8 in the morning, after having a very complete breakfast at the Hotel Capricorn.
Our first visit is to Winter Palace, Hobsburg, where we arrived at 9 or so and took the ticket to see the silverware and apartments of Sissí, much more different than what we saw yesterday at the Schonbrunn Palace.
A great option to know the history of the city and that of this palace is to book this Free tour of Vienna Free! With guide in Spanish.

This has cost us about 9 euros per person (I have to say that I am writing at night and have lost count of the tickets we have taken today). The entrance to the palace is included in the Vienna Pass.
We also have free audio guide, so we stop at each of the 70 and peak points that are explained.

This takes about 2 hours. Really, after seeing the other palace yesterday, we are a little tired. But it is a highly recommended visit and that I would repeat without hesitation.
After this, we go to the Austrian National Library. The ticket is about 8 euros per person and as soon as you enter, the mouth opens to us by magic.

Austrian National Library

We remember Melk Abbey, which we met recently arrived in Austria, but this one, I don't know, has another "aroma".
We have a good time admiring every corner and taking photos (they can be taken without flash).

Austrian National Library

After this great visit, we go to the Capuchin Church to see the tombs of the Hamburg.
There we pay about 8 euros per person and we see all the royal tombs.

Capuchin Church

The truth is that we do it with a group in front and we are trying to advance them, until we reach the sissi tomb and it is impossible, we have to wait for the turn of the photos.
After this visit, we go to the Cathedral, to do what we had left pending and that yesterday, when we arrived in Vienna, it was already closed.
We see that the visits to the crypt are guided and in German, so we decided to skip this part and go directly to the elevator, to see the views from the rooftops.

Vienna Cathedral

This costs us 4.50 euros per person.
You get on an elevator and the views are on the "back" of the Vienna Cathedral, yet the views are great, despite having bars all around.

Vienna Cathedral

We go down and see that it is time to eat, so we look for a restaurant with a terrace, but do not sunbathe. In the end we end up in one very close to the Cathedral, where we eat beautifully.
After resting for a while, we are on our way to the Vienna opera, which Roger wants to visit.
Once there, they tell us that the visits are only at 10 and 11 in the morning.
With a disappointing face, we think that tomorrow we will decide if we come or leave it for the next time we come to Vienna, which we will surely do.
After the opera and getting a little confused with the plan, leading to this, some extra laps through the streets and parks at 40 degrees to spare, we arrived to the park of the Church of St. Charles of Vienna.

St. Charles Church of Vienna

There we walked for a while and we will see the church inside.
The ticket is 6 euros per person, but they allow you to go up by elevator to almost the dome, to see the frescoes (they cool for charging that money in a Church. I'm sorry, but I can't resist saying it)

St. Charles Church of Vienna

After this visit, where we begin to get tired of taking out the purse in each “religious” site that we enter, we go directly to the Secession. After this, we see that the heat is not scared and we are going to have a drink on a terrace, before continuing with the planning.

Vienna

After putting the batteries, we go to the area of the Parliament, the City Council and all this we see on the outside, taking pictures and trying to protect ourselves under the trees of the sun.

Vienna

As today's last visit, we have the Votivkirche Church, in this we do not enter, so from outside, we take the photos of rigor and at the same time we see the Sigmun Froid park.
We have read in the forums and in the guide the importance of Vienna Central Cafe, so we go straight for him, to soak up his coffee. But nothing, after giving 3 laps to the block, we have given up without finding it.
We have gone to the subway, ready to go downtown, do some shopping and go to the Hotel Sacher to try their “torte”.

Vienna

Along the street we were thinking about the chocolate cake that we were going to eat and while we sat at the table we were seeing it on our lips, as if it were real: Well, no! Roger is wrong again!
On request 2 Sacher, but no cakes, if not hot chocolates. One with rum and one without ...
40 degrees in the shade and the two “tontolabas” with 2 hot chocolates. Luckily, the 12 euros it has cost us have been worth the good laughs that we have missed.
After this, I promise that I will not let you ask for anything without first looking at it.
I had to buy a cake for a gift, so we, we have been left without trying it, but we get a gift.
Tomorrow, if you give us time, I plan to come back to try it.
After the chocolate and busted as we were, we did not feel like having dinner, so to finish off the task, we went to an ice cream shop next to the Vienna hotel and ate 2 good giant ice cream cups. We had to lower the hot chocolate before going to sleep.
Tomorrow will be our last day in Vienna and we still have many things to do. We have not finished our trip to Austria for free.
